Substance Use and Mental Health in the Perinatal Period: Challenger, Opportunities, and Treatment Approaches
Substance Use and Mental Health in the Perinatal Period: Challenger, Opportunities, and Treatment Approaches
I will provide an overview of the epidemiology of substance use in pregnancy and comorbidity with mental health conditions, review available literature on the risks of substance use to the birthing parent and offspring, and discuss best practices for screening and treatment of substance use disorders in pregnancy. In particular, I will focus on what is known about use of the medications we commonly use for substance use disorders (such as methadone, buprenorphine, etc) in pregnancy and lactation.
